Creator of innovative reading program
recognized by Mensa Foundation

The Mensa Education & Research Foundation is proud to award Jerry Martin of Grass Valley, Calif., the 2010 Copper Black Award for his “Saluting New Readers” (SNR) reading program.

Martin's SNR program helps motivate elementary students to be excited about reading while raising genuine self-esteem and having fun without competition. A former classroom teacher with a master’s degree in television production, Martin has successfully implemented this program as a volunteer for 13 years, reaching approximately 1,600 children in 100 classes. In 2008, Martin won an annual award from the National Retired Teachers Association for SNR.

"I'm so excited about this recognition from the Mensa Foundation," Martin said. "This project has been a labor of love for me and something I truly believe in. In its next phase, I'm hoping to partner with non-profits so children across the nation can benefit from this program.”

“Awarding the Copper Black is the Foundation’s way of recognizing research, education and creativity in our society, which is why we are honoring Jerry Martin for his invention of the SNR program,” said Greg Timmers, President of the Mensa Foundation. “His innovative method of helping children with their reading skills is in direct alignment with the mission of the Foundation, and we are honored to present him with this award.”

The Copper Black Award is named after the late Ms. Copper Black, a Mensa member who greatly valued creativity. She left a legacy funding this special annual award for outstanding creative achievement by a member of American Mensa.
