2008 - 2009 Scholarship Winners

More than 5,200 students competed for 146 awards with a total value of $64,000. Winners ranged in age from 13 to 53 at the time of scholarship application; a 13-year-old, already in her first year of college, won an award for a second year in a row. Seventy-six Local Groups finished the scholarship program, and each of their local winners will receive a Karen Cooper or Diana Mossip Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $300. American Mensa's Heartland Region (7) had the most Local Group participation.

Winners came from 40 states including Hawaii and Alaska. The top five states in number of winners were California, Texas, Florida, Oregon and Michigan.

Scholarship winners' education plans range from associate degrees at community colleges through doctorate degrees at major universities. Their majors run the gamut of the fine arts, sciences, engineering, education, business, humanities, social sciences and nursing. About one-third of the winners are working on advanced degrees including medicine, physical therapy and law.

Students may apply for scholarships every year that they qualify; some winners this year also received nonrenewable awards in previous competitions.

Scholarship application forms are available between Sept. 15 and Jan. 15 of each year.
