2007 - 2008 Scholarship Winners
|
This year the Mensa Foundation received more than 4,000 applications and awarded 150 scholarships totaling $65,500. Eighty-four Local Groups finished the scholarship program, and each of their local winners will receive a Karen Cooper or Diana Mossip Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $300.
The youngest scholarship winner is 12; she is skipping from eighth grade to college in a special program for the highly gifted. The oldest winner is 57. While the majority of winners are pursuing a bachelor's degree, 23 are pursuing a master's degree, 13 are pursuing doctoral degrees, and 10 are pursuing associate degrees.
Winners come from 41 states, ranging from Alaska to Florida and from Hawaii to Maine. California was the big winner with 17 awards. For having the highest percentage of groups participating, Region 7 received an additional $500 regional award for the second year in a row. Region 7 also had the most scholarship winners, with 19 awards; however, the awards were fairly well distributed. Region 9 had 18 scholarship winners, and four more regions had 17 and 16 winners apiece.
Students may apply for scholarships every year that they qualify; some winners this year also received nonrenewable awards in previous competitions.
Scholarship application forms are available between Sept. 15 and Jan. 15 of each year.
